Causality Project - Godzilla & The Great Wave

This project is near and dear to my heart, and easily on of my favorite illustrations. The goal was to take an image that I loved and expand on it to show what might be happening outside of the visible frame. The challenge was to imagine externalities that could exist outside of the original image, and show how they might affect elements of the image through a cause and effect relationship. In this case I chose The Great Wave Off Kanagawa, the famous woodblock print by Japanese artist Hokusai, as my starting image.

As a kid I grew up watching every single cheesy Godzilla movie ever made, so finding inspiration for this one wasn't hard. I imagined Godzilla taking a break from flattening Tokyo to hit the coastline of Kanagawa, Japan for a battle with another monster - inspired by the fabled Kraken. The Great Wave itself is the direct result of the struggle between these two titans. Cause and effect.
